The 50th running of the Lilac Bloomsday Run takes place on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, and if you've never done it, this is the year.

What Is Bloomsday?

Bloomsday is a 12-kilometer (7.46-mile) road race held annually in Spokane, Washington. Organized by the Lilac Bloomsday Association since 1977, it's one of the largest timed road races in the United States — regularly drawing 40,000 to 50,000 participants from across the region and beyond.

But calling Bloomsday just a race undersells it. The course winds through Spokane's neighborhoods and landmarks, with live entertainment along the way, thousands of volunteers, and an energy that's impossible to replicate. Elite runners chase prize money at the front. Families walk it together at the back. Everyone finishes with a shirt and a story.

That's the thing about Bloomsday — it belongs to all of it. The fast and the slow. The competitive and the casual. The lifelong runners and the people who dusted off their shoes for this one day.

The Course: 12K Through the Heart of Spokane

The Bloomsday course is challenging in the best way. Starting in downtown Spokane, it rolls through some of the city's most recognizable stretches before the infamous Doomsday Hill — a steep climb that tests your legs and your resolve. Clear the hill, and you'll know you've earned it.

The course finishes near the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, where the post-race atmosphere is loud, proud, and celebratory. Whether you're crossing the line in under 40 minutes or closer to two hours, the finish line feels the same: like you did something worth doing.

Wave starts begin at 9:00am, with elite and seeded runners going first. If you're new to Bloomsday, you'll be assigned a corral based on your expected finish time — no need to stress about being in the wrong group.

The 50th running of Bloomsday is a moment the city has been building toward. The Lilac Bloomsday Association has set a goal of 50,000 participants — one for every year of the race — and the energy around this edition is palpable. Expect the celebration to match the occasion.

If you've run Bloomsday before, come back for this one. If you've been meaning to do it for years and haven't gotten around to it, 2026 is your year. You'll be able to say you ran Bloomsday's 50th.

Beyond the 12K: Events for Everyone

One of the things that makes Bloomsday weekend unique is that it's genuinely inclusive — and not just because of the range of runners in the main race. There are events built for families, kids, and corporate teams.

Junior Bloomsday is designed for 3rd through 7th graders, with a shorter course and its own prize pack. It's a great introduction to racing for younger runners and a way for families to participate together.

Marmot March is a 1-mile walk/run for children in third grade and younger, held at Riverfront Park. Kids color their own shirts with provided markers and finish alongside parents and guardians — it's genuinely one of the most charming things happening in Spokane all year.

Corporate Cup pits company teams of 3–5 employees against each other in a team competition inside the main race. If your office has been looking for a reason to get moving together, this is it.
